China Southern Airline will in August launch direct flights between Nairobi and Guangzhou as it seeks to tap the rising demand for services from business people.

The Chinese airline will start flying from Nairobi to Guangzhou in August three times a week and it plans to introduce daily flights from Nairobi depending on the level of demand.

Apart from the direct flights between the two cities, the airline will also be connecting local travellers to domestic flights that it operates to neighbouring cities within China.

Vice-President of marketing Wells Zheng said the airline will use Nairobi as its entry to the Africa market.

“This will make it more convenient for those passengers who want to transfer from other countries of Africa to China via Nairobi and ease transfers for travellers extending their trip to domestic China, South East Asia and Australia through China Southern Airlines’ route network,” he said.

The introduction of direct flights between Nairobi and Guangzhou is a major blow to Kenya Airways, which had a passenger referrals agreement with the Chinese airline.

Under the agreement, China Southern Airlines would make bookings for its local travellers through its Nairobi agents and transfer the passengers to Kenya Airways and share the revenue generated.
