Running a small home-based business offers many advantages such as saving money on gas, tax breaks among other benefits.

However, the success of the business is pegged on aggressive marketing. Below are simple ideas to help you promote your small business as if it were a billion dollar enterprise.

1.) Website – Invest in a domain name and website for your business.  A website is just like a physical location for your business. It lets people to access your business from around the world.

2.) Target market – Choose a market for your products or services. The narrower the audience the easier it will be to meet their specific need. Marketing to a very wide customer can be so overwhelming and ineffective.

3.) Goals – Create realistic goals for your business. These should be based on what you can produce without relying on external assistance. Once you determine your actual production you can always improve on the numbers gradually.

4.) Marketing budget – Set aside some money for marketing your home based business. Every business no matter how small requires a budget for marketing. Determine how much you are willing to spend on items such as business cards, flyers, classified ads and so on. Be reasonable!

5.) Tracking – Track your marketing and keep a log of what marketing techniques produce the most paying customers. For example, if your classified ads produce more paying customers than flyers, it will be prudent to cut the cost of your flyers to apply that money toward the classified ads.

6.) Search engine optimization (SEO) – Search engine optimization helps your website’s search engine ranking by associating it to keywords and links that will make the site easier to find. Potential clients searching for the products or services that you provide will see your site in the first pages of the website search. This has the potential to bring you more paying customers.

7.) Offline marketing – In addition to online marketing, use offline techniques to reach potential customers. Attend seminars, workshops and other networking events in your town with business cards and flyers.
